Built in Germany in 2003 for the Asian market, this Variant was delivered new in Armenia. In 2007, due to a change of residence, it found its way to Spain.
What a start to a story huh? A high-spec, 2003 Golf IV imported from Armenia. But it sure doesn't end there... the odometer proudly displays 411.000km.
One would think you'd have to be crazy to buy something like this, until you start it up. You're not even done twisting the key and the renown ASZ awakes with its characteristic, tractor-like sound.
This version of the 1.9TDI produces 130hp and 310Nm, delivering excellent low-range power and surprisingly good performance overall. It is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox which makes it unbelievably efficient.
Not too long ago I took it on a 1500km-roadtrip in a single day and it averaged 5.3l/100km. It easily does over 1000km on a single tank and outruns cars with more powerful engines with no issues.
It truly is a marvel of a powertrain, and this one has been maintained like it should. The timing belt and water pump were replaced at 387.000km, the oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter are new, the alternator is new, the thermostat and its housing are new, and the car drives like it has half its mileage.
But not only the mechanics are impressive, the Variant's equipment is as well. Remote central locking with factory alarm and two keys, automatic climate control, xenon headlamps, cruise control, rear parking sensors, on-board computer and many other ammenities make it truly easy and convenient to live with.
The body and paint are in good condition considering its mature mileage, but it does show some scratches and marks from road debris, as well as non-structural rust bubbles on one fender and some minor dents. The interior also shows some wear, as expected at this pricepoint.
The car is sold as is, with no warranty, due to its age and mileage. However, if I personally had to choose a car out of our fleet that I trust most, it would be this one.
