“The blonde in the red convertible” is how the previous owner of this 1996 Mazda MX-5 was known around town. She bought it new in 1996 and left it to her sister in 2017 after her passing.
So this car has been in the same family since new, used only for weekend outings, which is why it boasts just 85.000km, and recently brought up to date by the granddaughter’s better half, who is an automotive design student.
Brought up to date doesn’t mean just maintenance. The car has benefited from a repaint in its original colour, since the original, single layer, Japanese paint had faded under the Spanish Sun.
It also got a fresh timing belt, water pump, coolant line refresh, spark plugs and cables, fluids, filters, tyres, brake pads, discs and calipers, silentblocks, suspension, and a long list of parts, carefully documented with a stack of bills. You name it, it’s been overhauled. Zero leaks, zero noises, zero vibrations. This MX-5 looks, feels and drives like it just left the factory.
The original seats have been replaced by leather-wrapped examples, and the steering wheel has been upgraded to a period correct Momo unit. All stock parts are delivered with the car.
The 1.6, in-line 4 cylinder produces 90hp, put to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual. The NA’s light weight and excellent chassis make it agile and sufficiently powerful.
The convertible roof is also new. The original tool kit, spare wheel and accesories, are present. The car is delivered with a fresh inspection and is ready to be enjoyed fully without a worry in the world.
Expensive? Sure. But I dare you to find a better one to drive. Meticulously maintained, this MX-5 is the one to get for Sunday drives. The value also won’t go down if it’s well-kept. This car is showroom fresh.
