This 1991 Volkswagen Caravelle 2.4D is a pre-facelift T4 generation van. It is powered by an in-line 5-cylinder, naturally aspirated, diesel engine, producing around 80hp to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual.
The non-functional odometer shows us 208.000km, but regular inspections up until 2023 with gradually ascending numbers make us believe that, even though the total mileage is unknown, it is fair to assume it is close to that number.
The head gasket was replaced, per the last owner, in 2022. Since I’ve had it, the van got a full repaint in two-tone white and grey, new front and rear head- and tailights, used rims on new tyres and a general interior overhaul.
The last owner had it set up as a campervan, with built-in furniture, an auxiliary battery and some removable arrangements. The van is homologated for 2 to 9 seats, so multiple configurations are possible. Currently it is a 4 seater with a built-in rear deck and storage.
It has two, period correct, Webasto sunroofs installed and homologated on its papers. Same goes for the bigger than stock tyres and rims and the tow hook.
The van still needs some work before it will pass an inspection, but it runs and drives great. Minor adjustments need to be made, but we’ve decided to sell it as it sits, a working and driving project with lots of potential and possibilities.
